The Rabbit Proof Fence #2

After watching the film, Rabbit Proof Fence, it motivated me to think about the whole concept of Australian colonization again in the Aboriginals perspective. Even though the British did not really harm them in any physical ways, it was shocking and upsetting how they had separated half caste children from their families. In the story, when Molly and others escaped, A.O Nevile instantly tried to catch them again which really clearly shows how the British didn't want to leave out a single half caste. It was surprising how A.O Nevile thought he was doing the right thing, indeed helping them to get educated. I also learned how the British gave opportunities to only half castes who had whiter skin to get educated in public schools. And they taught others with darker skins farming and cleaning to become maids and farmers in future. On the other hand, I also learned that not all white people were vile, there were many white people in the story who actually helped the three girls during their journey back to their home. When Daisy headed to a train station by herself, it was really heartbreaking to see her getting captured after all her risk-taking journey. This movie made me feel a connection with the three girls. I feel that the British really needs to apologize to the Aboriginals for what they had done to them.

Rabbit Proof Fence

Today, in Humanities class, we watched the movie, rabbit proof Fence. It was a film based on a true story of three half-caste girls, Molly, Daisy and Gracie. A Half caste is a person who is a mixed aboriginal.

In the 1930s, the British colonizers took half castes to make the whole race in Australia more like them.(White race). The story begins in Jigalong, where men came to Molly and other two girls' family to take them to re-education camp.

I think Molly is a hero, because she was courageous enough to escape from the camp. She is an intelligent girl who knows how to track, in the camp, she sees clouds and predicts there would be rain which will reduce chance of getting caught. She was very fearless, she took life risks for what she believed was worth fighting for, which was freedom.

Reflection on my learning proflie.

Everyone has different personalities, ways they react to certain situations, and ways they learn.

Today in humanities class, we had such a meaningful class where we did few tests to find out which learning profile we are. Everyone has different ways of learning, strengths and weaknesses. I think by knowing my learning profile and applying when I study, it will make it much easily for me to focus on my work and be successful.

"These learners will benefit from sitting where they can process internally, quietly and are allowed allowed to doodle or manipulate clay while learning". I agree with this. I think I learn best when I'm in a quite place without disturbing noises where I can focus well. I am very sensible in hearing. Even little noises from computers distract me from learning.

"When under stress, this learner is at a great disadvantage because they cannot access their dominant hemisphere with sensory input, however, when not stressed this learner can more easily access logic/gestalt integration than any of the other logic profiles." I think this is true.When I'm under stress, I feel like that I'm no longer involved in class, as if my brain has been shut off. So it's really important for me to release my stress by doing simple activities like Lazy 8s and thinking caps from Brain Gym especially before tests so I can do my best.

"This learners may need to move,touch and manually explore in order to organize and express information." Since I have the dominant left hand connected to the Kinesthetic gestalt hemisphere, I need to move, touch and explore in order to organize and express information. This means that I need to do more activities that involve physical things rather than just sit and listen to the teacher. So strategies I will use from now on is to review information physically rather than just writing them on papers. For example, acting out what happened in Act1, Julius Caesar, than just memorizing them by reading.

4) I would like my teachers to know that whenever I'm understressed, I might process really poorly because i'm totaly left limited profile. But when I'm relaxed, I can more easily acess logic/gestalt integration than any of logic profile. This means that getting not stress is really important to me. So I would be really pleased if we can have simple brain activities before classes.

Brunelleschi's Activity Blog

Flippo Brunelleschi was once only known as a man with crazy ideas. In Florence, the great Catholic Church was left without its dome for more than a decade; many engineers tried but found it impossible because of its size and weights. But Brunelleschi with his hidden talent, he finished the dome in year 1436 and people started to recognize him as the most talented engineer in Florence.

I believe creative leadership was the most important prompts to Filipo Brunelleschi in building his dome. This is because he proofed his ideas by using eggs. First, he asked others if they can make an egg stand with its tip. Everyone failed. Then, he broke the egg's tip a bit and the egg stood up. If he hasn't done this, people would have not even tried to help him building his dome, because this creative leadership led people trust him and his theory about dome.

We are lucky to live in the 21st generation where great inventions have already created such as ipods and light bulbs. New ideas lead us to inventions that make our life easier. Then, where do new ideas come from? I think curiosity is what makes us to think about new ideas. Back in the ancient time, people started to cook with fire because they were curious about what fire is. If no one was curious enough to even try to cook food with fire, no one would have realized how useful fire is. Even in these days, people are still curious about how they can make something better. For example, apple just invented ipad because they wanted to make something better than other laptops. To conclude, I think curiosity led new ideas. Until people stop asking themselves and being curious, there will be new ideas, forever.

Responding to the essential question: What makes a good story?

I think good characterizations makes a good story. In my opinion, "Thank You Ma'am" by Langston Hughes has the best characterizations than other shorts stories we read from this unit. Even though it's a short story, Langston Hughes represented Luella and Rogers really well using both indirect and direct characterizations. I really liked the character, Luella who is really brave and also kind, because I think she's the perfect hero type in real life.

I’m Korean. In 2009, more than ten celebrities in Korea suicide from Melancholia. I really don’t want to embarrass my country by writing by like this, I chose this as my topic because I want it to stop. Korea is the only country with this issue. There are reasons why Koreans comments bad things about others in Internet. All most all the South Koreans love to sit and use computer. In average, Koreans use computer for 4.4 hours a day. So, naturally people go to website, and view news about celebrates and leave bad comments about them. Even if they don’t know anything about them, even if they don’t really hate them, they write bad comments for fun or to prevent their stress from their school or work.

Starting from 21st century, ever since Internet became really popular in Korea, people lost their mind without realizing that the words they actually say in Internet can hurt others feeling. I was really upset when I heard news that one of my favorite actress suicide last year. The thing that made me more upset was the comments of the news, people were saying things like. “Thanks god you died,” “You deserve to die!” It was shocking, how can people actually say that to others? It’s just amazing how these people who are not even adults sit in a chair with their computer and leaving comments like this. Celebrities are also people like us; we don’t have rights to hurt them. When I become a parent, I will teach my daughter how to use the Internet properly, that words can hurt people.

It’s not only about celebrities, we need to think first before we say any thing to someone, including your close friends, family or even someone you hate. If everyone start to believe in this, many people would be able to live much happier life.

Answers to the Battle of Hastings Game

This game is called "The Battle of Hastings Game". The setting of the game is 14,October, 1066 at Hastings in England. It is based one the actual event. To play the game,first you have to choose which you want to play the game as. You can choose either Duke William of Normany or Harold Godwinson. As you play the game, you have to choose your movements in order to win the battle, but if you choose wrong one, you will lose the game.

The thing I enjoyed about this game is that you can easily win the game if you know about the actual event, the Battle of Hastings well. Also, it's a very historical and educational game, I learned a lot of things after playing this game. First, I learned that winning a battle needs good stratigies and plans, without using them, you will end up with death. Also, I learned that I need to study more about the Battle of Hastings because I was really struggling with the game.

During the battle of Hastings, the English used 'shield wall' to block the Saxons. The Normans broke the English 'shield wall' with many attempt of attacks and trick retreats. While fighting, some one screamed, "King William is dead!". The Saxons chased them, but then they found out that King William was alive. The Normans knights turned and attacked. At last when Harold died, victory came to William.
I think this type of game is valuable learning experience because you can check if you know enough about the event.

Catherine Called Birdy

The historical fiction book, 'Catherine Called Birdy' by Karen Cushma is a journey of a noble's teenage daughter's hard life in middle age. Three of the main themes in the book are gender equality, medicine and family freedom. In page 141 and 142, Catherine says that there are many male saints who are bishops, popes, missonaries and other jobs while female saints are mostly just someone's mom or someone who's refusting to marry some powerfull pagan. This proves that gender equality is the theme of the book, because it tells that men could do whatever they wanted and most women couldn't even choose a job they wished to be. In page 155, Catherine's mom is sick for over 3 days while pregnant, she already lost her 5 babies which shows clearly that they didn't have proper medicines in Middle ages. In page 137, Catherine's father tells her that she will be quite,agreedable,and obedient and marry the pig. This proves the lack of family freedom where she gets force to marry. Catherine didn't have any freedom or opportunity to choose the person to marry. To sum up, the life in middle age was extremly frustrating especially for being a noble girl.

The owner of this bag is most likely a female because there are perfume, lip gloss and the mirror inside the bag. She could be from a country where pounds are used, because one of her book has a tag with $ sign. She might be a tourist in Hong Kong because she had a Hong Kong map and tooth paste and brush for travelers in her bag. Maybe she has kid or kids to give Chinese animal books or she is someone who is learning Chinese. There is a photo of heart with number 10 on it, which is made of flowers. Photo seems like it’s for anniversary picture, so maybe this person has 10 years of marriage. By looking at lip gloss, mirror and earrings, this person likes to look good. Anti-inflammatory tells that this person has a throat problem. This person might be a person who really cares about if they smell good because there is perfume and peppermint gum in the bag. Does the boy in the striped pyjamas deal with the sensitive subject of the Holocaust in an appropriate way?

No, I think the book, 'The Boy In the Striped Pyjamas' doesn't deal with the Holocaust, because John Boyne used a Nazi's point of view. Even though it was a good choice because it didn't make the whole book complicated with fears and horror, I thought Bruno wasn't that serious about what was happening in Germany. Everything that happened was translated to more like 9 years old boy's eyes. Surely, the Holocaust was more serious that when Bruno felt after moving to Outwith. In the real history, people didn't really suffer because of loneliness(well some people did but..) It was all about surviving! food and death. Maybe it would have deal with the subject more in an appropriate way if the author wrote the book in Shumel's point of view. For example, in the first chapter everything was basically about having to move into a new house, it would have been more interesting if John Boyne wrote about Shumel getting into the concentration camp. To add up, I didn't like the face he wrote the book as a Nazi's son's point of view, a Jew's point of view would have really deal it with the reality, showing more fears and horrors.

Assignment band blog posting VOID

Part1.

ISKL's mission statement:

I think adding a silence after the word, 'that' creates the best tension. When you add a void after the word, 'that' audience will get curious and question about what's going to be said. Because when you only say that and doesn't really say what 'that' is, it really makes people want to know what that actually is. Also, audience will wait for the speaker to complete the sentence which will also create interesting feelings.


Part 2

Composers can create tension by suddenly changing the mood of music, using different instruments for melody and using minor scales. Composers can release by going back to the same mood,instruments before he created the tension.

Part 3

Answers of the Story

1) I would call this story 'The Black Box', because the black box is very important in this story. And I'm not sure why but i feel that the black box is making a void, making me wonder who's going to get the lottery.

2) I thought lottery was always good thing. I thought they would have a really big celebration for the person who won the lottery. but i was wrong, the lottery wasn't a good thing at all. They stoned Tessie(who won the lottery) It was really surprising.

3) I really wanted to open it, I was curious about the ending of the story. Then I started to wonder why teachers are doing this to us. This whole thing was about the void. Not letting us open this paper until 5 pm didn't made any changes, nothing would have gone wrong if somebody opened it earlier, but I knew that teachers wanted to make us question and wonder. I think this part was another void in this assignment.

4) I felt really nervous, and wanted to get a paper with a black dot, because way back then, I thought a paper with a black dot was a good thing. Unfortunately I got a paper without a dot. To be honest, I opened it on bus, since nobody was looking.(sorry) because I was full of curiosity and couldn't handle it anymore.

5) It was interesting, how the author keep saying black, black and black. Cause usually black represents bad things. I think they're voids, really make me curious. like for black paper, I get curious who's going to get it.

6) The end of story was really shocking, gave me all the answers. I was really confused why Mrs.Hutchinson keep saying 'this isn't fair'. but then I realized why.

7) No, my prediction wasn't correct at all. But I think the author wants my prediction to be wrong, because that's how he created this so interesting, by building all the elements and then at the end he had changed it upside down.

8) If there were titles, and less of void it would have been easy for me to predict the ending. but if it was easy to predict the ending, I wouldn't have died to read the story.

One of the greatest photographers, Steve McCurry was born in Philadelphia, 1950. He graduated the College of Arts and Architecture at the Pennsylvania State University. He became famous with his photography, which captures human struggle and joy. McCurry takes his risky journeys around the world to take good pictures in countries like Pakistan. He also has won several awards. One of his photography,the Afghan girl is chosen as the most magnificent photos in the world. He also was a writer, he wrote nine books. In many of his photos, he captured civil conflicts during Iran- Iraq War. The main themes of his photo are sadness and suffering

Among those amazing photos in Steve McCurry's blog, this photo which was taken at Kuwait, 1991 during a war by Steve McCurry had captured my attention. There is a dead body in foreground and a tank in the background. I also can see a small fire way back in the foreground. When I first saw this picture, the face of the dead body really caught my eyes. He really focused on the face; it’s hard to recognize, except its terrible facial expression which really tells me how cruelly this person has been killed. The dead body seems like a soldier’s, burned during the explosion. He used color to tell the mood of the picture. Every thing except the fire is black, representing the death, sadness and suffering. Even the color red of fire is emphasizing the explosion, maybe the color of hell. I think McCurry is trying to emphasize that wars only leads to death in this photo. Just like he said, if man kinds don’t stop the wars, mankind will die because of the wars.

Steve McCurry’s photos are great, because he uses colors, positions, balance, size and others to warn us that if you take away human rights from some people, they will suffer and die. His photos also makes us realize what is happening outside. I think his photos will last forever, because he captures all the sadness and suffering during human's histories. And histories will last forever in our heart, especially histories that made us suffer. I thought that I was reading a history book when I went throw his photos, though it was much interesting than a history book, it captured a lots of historical events, moods. Steve McCurry is just amazing! I hope he keeps taking more of these amazing photos, so people can realize the reality, the people who are suffering without some rights and that we got to help them.

Jason and the Golden Fleece

Question1

I think Jason and the golden fleece fits with the cycle of hero which was developed by Joseph Campbell, because of these facts.


Birth: He's unusual birth actually caused his journey. When he was born as the son of the king Aeson in Thessaly, he almost gets killed by his uncle when he was young by his uncle, Pelias. His uncle disobey his father to get the crown and become a king, so the king and queen gets kicked out to the mountain, Pelion.

Call to adventure: when he returns to the kingdom after finishing Chiron's teaching, he meets Pelias and asks him for the crown. The wicked uncle gives him the dangerous quest before he accepts him, getting the Golden Fleece.

Elixir: Elixir is like the reason for the journey like the goal of an adventure. In Jason of the Golden Fleece, I think the elixir is getting the crown back from Pelias, because that was the reason why and how he start the journey to find the Golden Fleece, so he can be the king.

Helpers: . In his journey, he asks 50 Greek heroes to join his adventure, like Hercules, Odysseus and others. Even though Jason was the leader, without them, he wouldn't have succeed his quest. And in my opinion the most helpful person for Jason was actually his lover, Medea. She killed her younger brother, betray her father and kill Pelias just because of Jason. Even though at the end, Jason's love for Medea disappears because of her cruelty, she really loved him and helped him.

Helpers/Amulets: The king and queen send him to Chiron, one of the greatest teachers in the Greek myth. He learned every skills and knowledge he need for his journey from Chiron. Jason became strong and mature because of his lessons.

Tests: There were few tests in Jason and the golden fleece. Especially when Jason and the Argonauts were in the way to the island where the Golden Fleece, they across the clashing rocks, the monsters such as siren, fire-breathing bulls.

The final battle: After passing all the tests, he reached a island where the Golden Fleece was located. Fighting the dragon ,which was told to guard the Golden fleece by gods was his final battle. It was most challenging and the last step to accomplish his main quest, but at the end he fought bravely with helpers and could win the battle and get the golden fleece.

The return: After the final Battle, he brought the Golden Fleece to his kingdom with Medea and his Argonauts. Pelias opened a big celebration. Many people and his Argonauts were glad to congrats his succeed. But after many days, Pelias didn't say anything about giving back his crown. Medea got angry, so she tricked with a magic to Pelias's two daughters and made them kill him.

Question 2

I read two different types of Jason and the Golden Fleece so far. They were really different, especially the way they described the character 'Medea'. In the first story was she was a wicked witch who tried to kill Jason, but the second one I read, Medea was like the second most important character in the story where they fall in love and she joins his journey. I think Greek people really loved this myth, they have changed the story so many times they want to. That's why there is so many different stories for one myth, Jason and the Golden Fleece.

In the cartoon, compare to the book I read, I think Jason is described as dependent and a bit weak. I think he gets too much of help by other heroes and believes in Medea too much at part 2, but I can't really say they did represented Jason well or not. People might think they didn't because of their thought of heroes being always independent and strong, but even in the story, he's just a person. Maybe he was weak and dependent but had enough knowledge to succeed.

I think Jason and the Golden Fleece is a story which is mixed with tons of facts and imaginations.

These facts are what I got from Humanities class...

• Mount Pelion does really exist.
  


• The island of Lemnos, Greece where Jason did his first test is real..
  


• Found the Bronze-Aged Palace of Jason.


• Greek people had enough technology to make Argo and go through the Black Sea.
  


• They found out that 1,400 B.C was when Jason did his quest.
  


• Jason and the Golden Fleece when there was the Trojan War and it was a real event.
  


• They found a real cave with drawings of Jason.
  

From these fact, there is obviously a possibility that some parts of the story might have been real, maybe people have changed some parts like those magical monsters to make the story to a myth.

Curiosity in the African myth, Orphan boy and the Greek myth, Pandora demonstrates to us that curiosity sometimes leads us to change. This can be proved because in Pandora, Pandora got punishments because of her curiosity of opening the box. When she opened the box, every disgusting and bad things came out to the world. Also in Orphan boy, the old man got punishments because of his curiosity of following the orphan boy. When the orphan boy found out that the old man had followed him, he lost his trust and left him. Also the man and his cows died. People who made these two myths enforced us that curiosity makes things go in disarray. Which is weird and does not make sense, because they also made myths because of their curiosity.

My name


I never complained about my name in my life, I never liked my name either. When I was young, in Korea there were many teachers asking me about my name. Maybe I was born to be negative. Well that's just who I am. I thought it was just wasting my time discussing about them. But I was totally wrong. I think names really do relate to you and your life like destiny!

One of person I knew in Korea had the worst name in the world. It was so bad I can still remember. It was "Akma " which means devil. I mean who in the world name their children a devil? though I don't know the another story of theirs, but really... Surprisingly he really was a person who has a soul of a devil. I can't blame him though, it's all his parent's fault of giving such bad name. So, to sum up, name is really important. It's also important to know what it means too, so I can at least know if my parents cared about my future.

My name is Se Jin Lee, a very easy name to memorize, though it’s hard to pronounce perfectly for people who aren’t Korean. They often mispronounce Si- instead of Se- and when I tell them the right pronunciation. They always ask me “What’s the difference?” I can’t understand why they can’t compare Se- and Si-, or is it just me who's so sensitive?

My best friend describes me as Winnie the Pooh. She say I'm a dull, warm and friendly person who's so comfortable to hug. I'm not sure why she thinks Pooh is dull,warm and friendly though. When my mom had her beautiful 3rd baby, she had a hard time giving her a name, because she had already used the best ones for the 1st and the 2nd daughters. First time she thought about giving me "Yeo Jin" which mean girl treasure(?). haha, I think I would have been a really beautiful girlish girl if my dad agreed with that name.

My grandfather wanted to help her, so he thought about a good name for a few weeks. Ignoring all the beautiful names, like Yu Na, Hyo Won and You Jin, he finally chose ‘Se Jin’ which sounds quite boyish. Though the reason why he chose that name was that he wanted me to become a respectable woman. Se Jin means the world treasure. What a lovely name! That’s why I get so mad when people call me Si Jin, because I love my name and Si Jin means marry-treasure or poo-treasure, which are funny but don’t even make sense.

My last name, Lee means a peach tree, which is probably a very fresh big tree with golden peaches. I wonder if that’s why I’m so sweet-hearted. Common Elements of Creation Myths

“A myth is the projection of a culture’s soul” Dictionary of Creation Myths. Many creation myths contain common themes of children against parents, people from mud and explanation of the world. This fact is very surprising because those creation myths are from all different cultures and times. In many creation myths, there are children who go against father, for example, the Greek myth, Pandora and the Korean myth, JuMulJu. This proves that even though people couldn’t communicate, people had the same ideas. One of the common elements in many creation myths is people being made from mud, for example, the African myth and Pandora. Even though these myths are from totally different countries, their beliefs were the same. Many creation myths explain the world like the Chinese myth of Phan Ku and the Chippewa myth. It’s amazing to see the connections between them even though they’re from different times. All the creation myths are actually from one thought, because they’re all sharing the main ideas no matter where and when it came from.
